Support for Matter in nRF Connect SDK

Software Development Kit (SDK) is a set of software tools and programs used by developers to build applications for specific platforms. SDK tools include many things, including libraries, documentation, code samples, processes, and guides that developers can use and integrate into their applications. SDKs are designed to be used on specific platforms or program languages. IoT device SDKs enable you to create applications that run on your IoT devices using a device client or module client. In this week’s article, we will talk about the full feature support for Matter 1.0 in the nRF Connect SDK recently introduced by Nordic Semiconductor. Before we start our article, to better understand the Matter protocol, you can read one of our previous articles ‘Matter: The New Innovative Smart Home Connectivity Protocol’ to better understand the Matter protocol.

nRF Connect SDK is used to create cellular IoT, Bluetooth Low Energy, Thread, and Zigbee products. It is an SDK that can be scaled up and used to create products based on chips such as nRF52, nRF53, and nRF91 Series wireless devices. It provides programmers with an extensible framework for creating both powerful and complicated software for more sophisticated devices and applications as well as software that is size-optimized for devices with limited memory. It incorporates a variety of examples, application protocols, protocol stacks, libraries, and hardware drivers in addition to the Zephyr RTOS. You can see the diagram of the nRF Connect SDK below:

A connectivity standard called Matter creates a common language to unite diverse ecosystems and makes it possible for smart devices made by various manufacturers to coexist together. By creating a new standard, it aims to improve the dependability of connections between smart home appliances and Internet of Things (IoT) platforms. It is an IoT compatibility standard that could soon influence how you purchase devices for your smart home. You can find more details about Matter from the link we shared above.

With the recent announcement, developers can now actively develop Matter-compatible devices today using chips such as the nRF52840 and nRF5340 that support Thread and Bluetooth LE.
